The big one: OpenAI's IPO nears
OpenAI's public S-1 prospectus is reportedly expected on SEC EDGAR in mid-to-late August, following a confidential filing in June, with a potential listing as soon as mid-September. The company is valued at roughly $852B and a public listing could reportedly target north of $1 trillion. It would be the first real look at OpenAI's financials. New models
- Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 is the one to beat. Released July 24, it reportedly tops Artificial Analysis's Intelligence (~61) and Agentic (~55.3) indexes, adds an "effort dial," and improves coding — at roughly half the prior flagship's price. It powers Claude and Claude Code.
- OpenAI shipped GPT-5.6-Cyber (Aug 10), the latest GPT-5.6 variant for security and agentic work, in ChatGPT.
- Google's Gemini 3.6 Flash (July 21) is a cheaper, faster workhorse across the Gemini app and API. Google is also reportedly replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android.
- DeepSeek V4-Flash (July 31) keeps undercutting on price (reported $0.14 / $0.28 per million tokens) — see DeepSeek. Grok 4.5 and Kimi K3 also landed, and xAI's Grok Voice "Think Fast 2.0" became the default on Aug 5.
Pricing & product updates
The theme beneath the releases is cost. OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Luna by a reported ~80% (to roughly $0.20 / $1.20 per million tokens), while DeepSeek and Gemini Flash push the floor lower. Frontier-class capability keeps getting cheaper — worth re-checking your provider costs this quarter.
Money
- Anthropic reportedly closed a $65B round in May at a ~$965B valuation — briefly the most valuable private company, ahead of OpenAI (~$852B).
- Anysphere, maker of Cursor, reportedly passed $1B in ARR.
- Elsewhere: OpenEvidence raised $250M (medical AI, ~$12B) and Shield AI raised $1.5B (defense AI).
Tool shake-ups worth knowing
- Meta launched Muse Code (Aug 5), a terminal coding agent from Meta Superintelligence Labs powered by Muse Spark 1.2 — a direct shot at Claude Code and Cursor. New on Toolglade: Muse Code.
- Amazon Q Developer is being retired; AWS is steering developers to its successor, Kiro.
- Sourcegraph moved Cody to enterprise-only and spun out Amp.
- PlayHT shut down after Meta acqui-hired its team; the closest active alternatives are ElevenLabs and Resemble AI.
- On the policy front, the US administration reportedly excluded open-weight models (like Llama and Nemotron) from its voluntary AI safety-testing framework.
