From blue links to AI answers
What changed, and why it matters for your business.
For twenty years, search meant one thing: type a query, get a list of blue links, click one. That model is being replaced — not entirely, but significantly — by AI that answers the question right on the page. Understanding this shift is the foundation of everything in this course.
What changed. Search engines and AI tools increasingly synthesize an answer for you instead of just listing links. Google now shows 'AI Overviews' — an AI-generated summary at the top of many results — and has a conversational 'AI Mode.' ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot answer questions directly, often citing a handful of sources. The user increasingly gets what they wanted without visiting your site.
Why this matters for you. If your business was found through search — people Googling a question and clicking your helpful article or your product page — that path is narrowing. When AI answers the question directly, fewer people click through. Ranking #1 no longer guarantees the traffic it once did. So the game shifts from 'rank in the links' to also 'be the source the AI cites in its answer.' That's what 'getting found in the AI era' means.
But don't panic — and don't believe the hype. Two things are true at once. The shift is real and worth adapting to. And it's surrounded by breathless hype, contested numbers, and vendors selling 'GEO services' as if it's a mysterious new science. This course's job is to give you the honest version: what's genuinely happening, what actually helps, and what's speculation. Spoiler: much of it is an extension of good SEO and genuinely helpful content, not a magic new discipline.
What this course covers. Module 1: the landscape and the vocabulary. Module 2: what actually helps you get cited (evidence-based). Module 3: specific tactics, honestly labeled proven vs. plausible. Module 4: measuring it and building a plan. Throughout, we separate evidence from hype — because this space has a lot of both.
The takeaway: search is shifting from blue links to AI-generated answers — Google's AI Overviews, plus ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini answering directly and citing a few sources — so users increasingly get what they need without clicking through. For businesses found via search, that path is narrowing and ranking #1 no longer guarantees traffic; the new game is being the source the AI cites. The shift is real and worth adapting to, but it's wrapped in hype and contested claims, so this course gives the honest version — and much of what works turns out to be an extension of good SEO and genuinely helpful content, not a mysterious new science.
Search for a few questions your business would want to be found for — in Google (look for an AI Overview) and in ChatGPT or Perplexity. Notice: does an AI answer appear? Which sources does it cite? Are you one of them? This is your starting point — seeing how AI answers already handle your topics.
