Learning with AI vs. avoiding learning
The single distinction that determines whether AI helps or hurts.
Here's the single most important distinction in the whole course, for students especially: **using AI to learn vs. using AI to avoid learning.** The same tool, the same assignment — but these two uses produce opposite results. Master this distinction and you'll know how to use AI to genuinely get smarter rather than to get a grade while learning nothing.
The two fundamentally different uses:
- **Using AI to *do the work*** — having AI write your essay, solve your problem, produce your answer. You get a finished product, but you didn't do the thinking, so you didn't learn. You can't do it yourself next time, you don't understand it, and (in an exam or real situation without AI) you're stuck. This is using AI to avoid learning — and it's both the integrity problem and the educational hollow.
- **Using AI to *support your thinking*** — having AI explain a concept you're struggling with, quiz you, give feedback on work you produced, or coach you through a problem so you solve it. Here you do the thinking — AI helps you do it better and understand more deeply. This is using AI to learn, and it can genuinely make you smarter.
Why the difference is everything. Learning happens through doing the mental work — struggling with a problem, forming your own understanding, retrieving and applying knowledge. When AI does that work for you, you skip the very process that builds understanding and skill. When AI coaches your work (explaining, quizzing, giving feedback while you do the thinking), it supports that process. So the exact same tool either builds your abilities or bypasses them — depending entirely on whether you or the AI is doing the thinking.
A useful test — who's doing the thinking? For any way you're using AI in your studies, ask: "Am I doing the thinking, or is the AI doing it for me?"
- If you are doing the thinking (and AI is explaining, coaching, quizzing, or giving feedback) → you're learning with AI. Good.
- If the AI is doing the thinking (writing it, solving it, answering it for you to submit) → you're avoiding learning. That's the trap.
This one question sorts almost every use into helpful or harmful.
The stakes for you as a student. This isn't just about integrity rules — it's about your own growth. If you use AI to avoid learning, you get grades without knowledge, and eventually that catches up with you: on exams, in later courses that build on skipped foundations, and in life and work where you need the understanding AI let you skip. If you use AI to learn, you get both — help and genuine understanding and skill. Using AI to learn is genuinely in your own interest; using it to avoid learning cheats mainly yourself.
The mindset: the defining distinction in AI and learning is using AI to learn vs. using AI to avoid learning — the same tool, opposite results. When AI does the work (writes, solves, answers for you), you skip the thinking that builds understanding and skill; when AI supports your thinking (explains, quizzes, gives feedback while you do the work), it helps you learn more deeply. The test is simple: "Am I doing the thinking, or is the AI?" Doing the thinking yourself, with AI coaching, means learning; letting AI think for you means avoiding learning — which cheats mainly yourself of the knowledge and skills you'll need. Use AI to learn, not to avoid learning: it's the heart of getting this right.
Apply the 'who's doing the thinking?' test to your own AI use. List a few ways you use (or would use) AI for studying, and sort each: are *you* doing the thinking (AI explains, quizzes, gives feedback → learning) or is the *AI* doing it (writes, solves, answers → avoiding learning)? For any in the second group, note how you could shift it to the first — keeping yourself doing the thinking with AI as your coach.
