AI in education today
How students and teachers actually use AI — and the real question.
AI has swept into education faster than almost anywhere else, and this course helps students, teachers, and parents navigate it wisely. The central question isn't whether AI is in education — it clearly is — but whether it helps students learn or helps them avoid learning. That question runs through the entire course.
How students actually use AI (the reality). Adoption is high and rising, though the exact numbers vary a lot by who's surveyed and when — so treat any single figure as a snapshot, not gospel. Broadly: surveys of university students have found the large majority using AI in their studies, while surveys of younger (US teen) students show lower but rapidly growing use — for example, roughly a quarter to half using AI for schoolwork in recent surveys. Students most commonly use AI to explain concepts, summarize material, get research ideas, and help with writing. Notably, students themselves often say they lack good guidance on how to use AI well — a gap this course helps fill. (Don't blend the different survey populations into one number; they measure different groups.)
How teachers use AI. Educator adoption is also substantial and growing — surveys have found a majority of teachers using AI tools during the school year, with a meaningful share using it weekly and reporting significant time savings (some report saving several hours a week). Teachers use AI for lesson planning, generating materials, differentiation, and feedback, with grading assistance less common. AI genuinely helps with the administrative and preparation burden teachers face.
The tools. There are AI tutoring and study tools (like Khan Academy's Khanmigo, and "study modes" or "learning modes" built into major assistants — designed to coach rather than just answer) and general assistants used for learning, plus AI woven into learning platforms. These are new and evolving fast, and their effectiveness is still being studied (more on that later) — so approach efficacy claims with healthy skepticism.
The real question — helps learning or avoids learning? Here's the framing that matters most: the same AI tool can help a student learn or help them avoid learning, depending entirely on how it's used. Used to coach your thinking (explain, quiz you, give feedback on your work), it can genuinely support learning. Used to do the work for you (write your essay, give you the answers), it can undermine learning while producing assignments you don't understand. This distinction — learn with AI vs. avoid learning through AI — is the heart of this course, and it applies to students and shapes how educators should respond.
The honest framing for this course: AI in education is neither a miracle nor a disaster — it's a powerful tool whose effect depends on use. This course is evidence-based and nuanced: it will show you how to use AI to genuinely support learning (Module 2), navigate academic integrity honestly (Module 3, including the crucial fact that AI-detection tools can't be trusted), and — for educators — teach and assess well in the AI era (Module 4). The goal is to harness AI's real benefits for learning while avoiding its real risk of replacing the thinking that learning requires.
The mindset: AI is deeply embedded in education — most university students and a majority of teachers now use it, for explaining, summarizing, writing help, lesson planning, and feedback — and the tools (tutoring aids, study modes, general assistants) are evolving fast with efficacy still being studied. The question that matters most is not whether AI is present but whether it helps students learn or helps them avoid learning, because the same tool does either depending on how it's used. This course takes an evidence-based, nuanced approach to using AI to genuinely support learning, navigating integrity honestly, and teaching and assessing well — harnessing AI's benefits while protecting the thinking that learning requires.
Reflect on the central question for your context: if you're a student, do you tend to use AI to *coach your thinking* (explain, quiz, give feedback on your work) or to *do the work for you* (write it, give answers)? If you're a teacher or parent, how do the students you know use it? Note where AI is currently helping learning vs. helping avoid it — that distinction is what this course helps you get right.
