Module 1: Getting Started with AI in Your Business

Your affordable AI toolkit

Free tiers cover most needs — don't overspend on ten subscriptions.

One of the biggest myths is that using AI well means paying for a stack of expensive subscriptions. For most small businesses, the opposite is true: you can do a great deal for free or nearly free. Getting this right keeps money in your pocket.

The three workhorses — all with real free tiers. The general-purpose AI assistants — ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), and Gemini (Google) — each have genuine free tiers (no credit card required) that cover the bulk of small-business needs: writing, brainstorming, summarizing, research, drafting. Free tiers have daily usage caps, but hitting a limit on one and switching to another is a perfectly legitimate way to stretch your capacity. Rough positioning (verify current — this changes fast): ChatGPT is the most versatile all-rounder, Claude is often preferred for writing and long documents, and Gemini fits best if you live in Google Workspace.

Use the AI already inside your tools. Before buying anything new, check what you already pay for. Your email, your CRM, Canva, Microsoft or Google's office suite — many already include AI features. Using those is often better than bolting on a separate subscription, because they're integrated with your actual work.

Don't scatter your spending. The classic small-business mistake is subscribing to ten niche AI tools, each promising to solve one thing, and quietly bleeding money. Resist it. Start with one general assistant's free tier as your workhorse. Only pay when you hit a genuine limit, or need business features like admin controls and stronger data-privacy commitments (important once you handle customer data — Module 4). Paid consumer tiers cluster around ~$20/month; you rarely need more than one to start.

The consolidation rule. More tools means more cost, more logins, more places your data lives, and more to learn. Fewer, well-chosen tools beat a sprawling toolbox — the same 'less is more' discipline that runs through good AI use generally. Most solopreneurs can accomplish a lot for $0–$20 a month.

The takeaway: you don't need a stack of expensive subscriptions — the three general assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) all have real free tiers that cover most small-business needs, and you can switch between them to stretch limits. Use the AI already bundled in tools you own before buying more, and resist scattering money across ten niche tools. Start with one free workhorse, pay only when you hit a real limit or need business-grade privacy controls, and keep your toolkit lean — most solopreneurs can do a great deal for $0–$20 a month. (Verify current prices and features; they change constantly.)

Try it

Audit your current tools: which ones you already pay for include AI features you're not using? Then pick ONE general assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini) as your workhorse and commit to its free tier first. Note your rule: you'll only pay for AI when you hit a real limit or need business privacy controls — not because a tool promised to change everything.
