The sales AI stack

The categories of sales AI tools — pick by your bottleneck, not by hype.

There are hundreds of sales AI tools and the list churns constantly, so learn the categories and pick by your actual bottleneck — not by chasing a "winner." Here's the current stack (a 2026 snapshot; verify specifics, they change fast).

The categories, by job:

  • General assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot) — one-off research, drafting, roleplay, and prep. Often your most-used tool.
  • Prospecting / data enrichment (Apollo, Clay, and others) — find and enrich contacts, and increasingly monitor signals (funding, job changes, hiring) to trigger outreach.
  • Sales engagement / outreach (Outreach, Salesloft, Apollo) — execute multichannel sequences and cadences at scale.
  • Conversation intelligence (Gong, Chorus) — record and analyze calls for coaching, deal insights, and risk signals.
  • CRM AI (Salesforce Einstein/Agentforce, HubSpot Breeze) — CRM-native automation: auto data capture, lead scoring, next-best-action.
  • Revenue intelligence / forecasting (Clari, Gong) — pipeline health and forecast rollups.
  • Meeting notetakers (Fireflies, Otter, Granola, Fathom) — transcripts, summaries, and CRM sync so calls log themselves.
  • Proposal / deal tools (PandaDoc) — proposals, quotes, and e-signature.
  • AI SDR agents (an emerging, volatile category) — autonomous outbound; promising but unproven at scale, and high-churn — approach with caution.

How to choose (the durable skill):

  • Start from your bottleneck. Spending too long researching prospects? A prospecting/enrichment tool. Drowning in call notes and CRM entry? A notetaker + CRM AI. Reps not learning from calls? Conversation intelligence. Don't buy tools for problems you don't have.
  • Lean on your general assistant first — it covers a lot (research, drafting, prep) before you need specialists.
  • Mind your existing CRM's AI — Salesforce and HubSpot bake in a lot; you may already own capabilities you're not using.
  • Don't over-stack. A few well-used tools beat a dozen half-used subscriptions (the lean-stack discipline).

The reality on AI SDR agents specifically: the fully-autonomous outbound category is the hottest and the shakiest — high churn, uneven results, and a real risk of generating spam that hurts you. If you explore it, do so carefully, measure honestly, and keep a human reviewing what goes out.

The takeaway: know the categories, buy against your real bottleneck, use your general assistant and existing CRM AI before adding specialists, and keep the stack lean. That's how you assemble a sales AI toolkit that actually helps you sell — rather than an expensive pile of tools you don't use.

Try it

Identify your single biggest sales bottleneck (research? outreach volume? call follow-up? CRM admin? forecasting?). Match it to the category above, and note whether your existing CRM already offers that capability before buying anything new.
