Module 2: Standing Out & the Real Rules

The AI-slop problem: how to actually stand out

When everyone uses AI, generic makes you invisible.

Here's the defining reality of job searching in 2026, and why how you use AI matters more than whether you use it: everyone is using AI now, so generic AI output no longer helps you stand out — it makes you invisible. Understanding this changes your whole strategy.

The AI-application flood. AI has made it trivial to mass-produce and auto-submit applications, and the volume has exploded — LinkedIn has reported on the order of 11,000 job applications submitted per minute, up sharply year over year, with popular roles drawing hundreds of applicants within days. Recruiters describe "drinking through a fire hose" of applications, many of them AI-generated and generic. On the employer side, companies are using AI to screen the flood. Both sides are now AI-armed.

Why generic AI output backfires. When a recruiter is wading through hundreds of similar-sounding, AI-generated résumés and cover letters, another generic AI application doesn't help you — it makes you blend into the indistinguishable pile. The very ease of AI mass-applying is why it doesn't work: everyone's doing it, so it's no longer an advantage. Recruiters have gotten good at spotting (and tuning out) generic "AI slop." Volume of applications isn't your friend either — spraying 200 generic applications is worse than sending 20 genuinely tailored ones.

How to actually stand out — be the opposite of AI slop:

  • Deeply tailor each application to the specific role and company (which AI makes fast) — the opposite of generic.
  • Be specific and personal — real accomplishments, genuine reasons you want this job, your authentic voice. Specificity is what cuts through.
  • Quality over quantity — fewer, genuinely targeted applications beat mass-applying. Put your energy into roles you truly fit and tailor hard.
  • Use your human advantages — networking, referrals, a real connection to the company, and things AI-generated applicants don't have.
  • Remember: AI-assisted + deeply human + honest is the winning combination. Use AI's speed to tailor and improve, then add the personalization only you can.

The mindset: in 2026, everyone uses AI to apply, so generic AI output makes you invisible, not competitive — recruiters are flooded (LinkedIn has reported ~11,000 applications per minute) and have learned to tune out generic "AI slop." The way to stand out is to be the opposite: deeply tailor each application, be specific and personal with real accomplishments and genuine reasons, favor quality over quantity (fewer, targeted applications beat mass-applying), and lean on human advantages like networking. Use AI's speed to tailor and improve your real story — AI-assisted plus deeply human and honest is what wins when everyone has AI.

Try it

Shift your strategy from volume to quality: instead of planning to mass-apply, pick a few roles you genuinely fit and commit to *deeply tailoring* each — specific reasons, real accomplishments, your authentic voice, plus any networking angle. Note why, in a world where everyone uses AI, this personal-and-tailored approach is what makes you visible rather than part of the 'AI slop' pile.
