Interview prep with AI (the honest way)

AI is a genuinely great interview preparation partner — used honestly. This lesson covers how to prep well with AI, and the firm line against using it to cheat.

How AI helps you prepare (do this):

• Generate likely questions. Give AI the job description and ask for the questions you're likely to face — behavioral, technical, role-specific. Now you can prepare, not be surprised.
• Practice STAR answers. For behavioral questions ("tell me about a time..."), use the STAR structure — Situation, Task, Action, Result — and practice building strong answers from your real experiences. Ask AI to help you structure and tighten them.
• Do mock interviews. Have AI act as the interviewer and ask you questions, then give feedback on your answers. This rehearsal builds real confidence.
• Research the company — mission, products, recent news — so you can speak knowledgeably and ask good questions.
• Prepare for one-way / async video interviews (where you record answers to preset questions). Practice concise 90-second answers, and set up good lighting, audio, and a clean background — the setup is part of the impression. Don't read from a script — eyes tracking text are obvious and kill authenticity; use brief notes near the camera at most.

The firm line — don't use AI to cheat during live interviews. Tools exist that feed you AI answers in real time during a live or video interview. Using them is cheating, against employer rules, and increasingly detected — interviewers watch for gaze patterns, unnatural pauses, and use live follow-up questions specifically to catch it. Beyond the risk, it's dishonest and sets you up to fail in a job you misrepresented your way into. Use AI to prepare thoroughly beforehand; then in the interview, it's you — which is exactly what genuine preparation makes you confident to be.

The honest payoff. Thorough AI-assisted preparation — anticipated questions, practiced STAR stories, mock interviews, company research — makes you genuinely ready and confident. That's a real edge, honestly earned, and far more valuable (and safer) than any real-time AI crutch.

The mindset: AI is an excellent honest interview-prep partner — use it to generate likely questions, practice STAR answers from your real experiences, run mock interviews with feedback, research the company, and prepare for one-way video interviews (practicing concise answers, good setup, no script-reading). But draw a firm line: don't use AI to cheat during live interviews — real-time answer tools are against the rules, increasingly detected, and dishonest. Prepare thoroughly with AI beforehand so that in the interview it's genuinely, confidently you. Honest preparation is the real edge.
