SciSpace was founded in 2015 by Saikiran Chandha (CEO) and Shanu Kumar, originally as Typeset, a manuscript-formatting tool. In 2022 the company rebranded to SciSpace and pivoted into an all-in-one AI research assistant spanning discovery, understanding, writing, and publishing. It operates from Milpitas, California, with significant engineering roots in Bengaluru, India.

As of mid-2026 the company reported roughly 60 employees and serves a large global base of researchers, students, and academic institutions through its web platform, Chrome extension, and reference-manager integrations.

The core product combines a semantic search engine over 280 million-plus papers (drawing on sources like Google Scholar and PubMed) with Copilot, an AI assistant that chats with any PDF to explain jargon, methods, equations, and results. The Literature Review workspace synthesizes insights across many papers into comparison tables, while specialized agents target areas such as biomedicine and meta-analysis.

On the output side, SciSpace offers an AI Writer, a paraphraser, automatic citation generation, and 40,000-plus journal formatting templates, plus translation across 75-plus languages. It integrates with Zotero, Mendeley, and Notion and ships a Chrome extension, though it does not currently offer a public API, mobile app, or self-hosted deployment.

SciSpace targets graduate students, PhD candidates, postdocs, and academic researchers who regularly conduct literature reviews and read dense scientific papers, as well as R&D and biomedical teams that need to scan emerging science quickly. Its multilingual support makes it especially useful for non-native English speakers, and its low price point and free tier lower the barrier for individual academics and budget-constrained labs.
