Toolglade’s take

LLaMA-Factory is one of the most comprehensive open fine-tuning toolkits, and the Gradio board genuinely lets you train a LoRA without touching code. It is best for researchers and ML engineers who want broad model and method coverage in one place. It is not a no-hardware option: you need a capable GPU and some understanding of fine-tuning concepts, and the fast pace of added models means occasional dependency-version friction.

Should you use LLaMA-Factory?

About LLaMA-Factory

LLaMA-Factory is a unified framework for fine-tuning more than a hundred open language and vision models, with a simple CLI and web UI. Machine-learning engineers use it to customize open models on their own data.

LLaMA-Factory is an open-source framework for fine-tuning large language and vision-language models without writing training code. It supports 100+ open models (Llama, Qwen, Gemma, Mistral, DeepSeek, GLM, Phi, and many multimodal models) and a wide range of training approaches: continued pretraining, supervised fine-tuning, reward modeling, and preference methods like PPO, DPO, KTO, and ORPO. It covers full-parameter, freeze, LoRA, and 2-to-8-bit QLoRA tuning, plus efficiency tricks such as FlashAttention-2, Unsloth, and Liger Kernel. You can drive it entirely from a config-based CLI or from LLaMA Board, a Gradio web UI, which is where the "zero-code" label comes from. It integrates experiment trackers (TensorBoard, Weights & Biases, MLflow, SwanLab) and faster inference via vLLM or SGLang with an OpenAI-style API, and it can export checkpoints, including an Ollama modelfile. Released under Apache-2.0, it is widely used by researchers and practitioners customizing open models, and it requires an NVIDIA (or compatible) GPU.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Fine-tunes 100+ LLMs and vision-language models from one framework, with fast day-one support for new releases
  • Covers many methods: SFT, pretraining, reward modeling, PPO, DPO, KTO, ORPO, and full/freeze/LoRA/QLoRA tuning
  • Zero-code option via the LLaMA Board Gradio web UI, plus a config-driven CLI
  • Built-in efficiency tricks (FlashAttention-2, Unsloth, Liger Kernel) and experiment tracking (TensorBoard, W&B, MLflow, SwanLab)
  • vLLM/SGLang inference with an OpenAI-style API, model export, and Apache-2.0 licensing

Cons

  • Requires an NVIDIA (or compatible) GPU with enough VRAM; it is not a CPU-friendly tool
  • You still need to understand fine-tuning concepts (datasets, methods, hyperparameters) to get good results
  • Rapidly adding new models and features can bring transformers/torch/CUDA version-compatibility friction
  • Windows users must manually install a CUDA build of PyTorch before it works
