Baidu ERNIE Bot

ERNIE Bot is Baidu's flagship generative AI assistant, powered by the ERNIE (Wenxin) foundation models and free for consumers since 2025. It offers conversation, writing, reasoning, coding, and multimodal generation across images, audio, and video, with strong Chinese-language performance and a mature developer platform (Qianfan). It is best for the China market and comes with the usual caveats around content regulation, data privacy, and vendor-stated benchmarks.

ERNIE Bot, known in Chinese as Wenxin Yiyan, is the consumer face of Baidu's ERNIE (Wenxin) foundation-model program. It is one of China's most widely used AI assistants, offering conversational Q&A, long-form writing, reasoning, coding help, and multimodal generation across images, audio, and video. Baidu made the consumer app fully free in April 2025 and has reported its AI assistant reaching around 200 million monthly active users. The model line has moved quickly. Baidu open-sourced the ERNIE 4.5 series in mid-2025 and unveiled ERNIE 5.0, a natively omni-modal foundation model, at Baidu World 2025 in November 2025, with an ERNIE 5.1 release reported in 2026. Headline figures such as parameter counts and benchmark scores come largely from Baidu's own materials and should be treated as vendor claims rather than independently verified facts. For developers and enterprises, ERNIE is available through Baidu's Qianfan / Baidu AI Cloud platform on usage-based per-token pricing, with deep integration into Baidu Search and the wider Baidu ecosystem. The product is optimized primarily for Chinese language and China-context tasks, and is subject to Chinese content regulation, which shapes both its strengths and its limits for international users.
