How to evaluate an AI tool without the hype

Every AI tool's landing page promises to change your life. Evaluation is how you see past that to whether a tool actually fits your work. Here's a repeatable checklist you can run on any tool in fifteen minutes.

1. The core job — does it do the one thing well? Ignore the feature list; identify the one job you'd use it for and test that. A tool that does your core job excellently beats one that does ten things adequately. Run a real task from your actual work through it, not the demo example.

**2. Output quality on your inputs.** Marketing demos are cherry-picked. Feed it your messy, real inputs — your actual document, your actual data, your actual style — and judge the output honestly. This is the single most predictive test.

3. Fit with how you work. Does it fit into your existing workflow, or demand you reorganize around it? Does it integrate with the tools you already use? A slightly-worse tool that fits your flow often beats a better one that doesn't.

4. Pricing and what's really free. Understand the actual cost: is the free tier usable or a teaser? What does the paid tier cost per month, and is it worth it for how often you'd use it? (Subscription creep is a real cost — Module 4.)

5. Data and privacy. What happens to what you put in? Does it train on your data? For anything sensitive, this is a gate, not a nice-to-have (Module 4 goes deeper). Consumer tiers and enterprise tiers often have very different answers.

6. Reputation and longevity. Is it from a credible team? Is it actively maintained? AI tools appear and vanish constantly — a hand-reviewed directory (like Toolglade) that checks tools for real usefulness and flags dead ones saves you from betting on vaporware. Real user reviews beat the marketing copy.

The meta-skill: evaluate against your need, with your inputs — not against the hype, with their demo. A tool is "good" only relative to a job you actually have. Run this checklist and you'll stop signing up for trending tools that don't fit and start choosing ones that earn their place in your stack. Fifteen honest minutes of testing saves months of paying for something you don't use.
