AI voice cloning and how to defend against it
A cloned voice on the phone is the fake most likely to target you personally.
Of all the fakes in this course, AI voice cloning is the one most likely to reach you directly and cost you money. Modern tools can imitate a specific person from only a few seconds of sample audio — often scraped from a public video, a social clip, or even a voicemail greeting. The result is a phone call that sounds like someone you love, or someone you report to at work.
The two scams to know:
- The family-emergency scam. You get a panicked call in a familiar voice: I have been in an accident, I am in trouble, I need money right now, please do not tell anyone. The urgency and secrecy are the whole trick — they are engineered to stop you from pausing to verify.
- The workplace-payment scam. A voice that sounds like an executive or a vendor asks an employee to make an urgent wire transfer or change payment details. These target businesses and can be very costly.
The defenses are refreshingly low-tech, and they do not depend on your ear catching a subtle glitch — you cannot count on that, because the clones are good.
- Set a family safe word. Agree on a private word or phrase with close family and trusted colleagues. In any emergency call asking for money or sensitive action, ask for the safe word. A scammer will not have it. Choose something not findable online and not obvious.
- Hang up and call back. This is the strongest single move. End the call and dial the person on their known number yourself, or reach them another way such as a text or a different app. A cloned voice cannot answer the real persons phone.
- Slow down on urgency and secrecy. Every one of these scams pressures you to act immediately and tell no one. Treat that combination as the alarm itself. Real emergencies survive a five-minute verification.
- Reduce your voice footprint where practical, and talk to relatives. The people most at risk — often older family members — benefit most from hearing about the safe word and callback habit before a scammer calls.
Do not try to win by detecting the fake in the moment. Assume the voice can be faked and rely on the procedure instead: verify through a separate, known channel before you act.
Recap. AI voice cloning can copy a specific person from seconds of audio and powers two costly scams — the family-emergency call and the workplace-payment request — both built on urgency and secrecy to stop you verifying. Do not trust your ear to catch the fake; use procedure instead: agree on a private safe word with family and colleagues, and above all hang up and call the person back on a known number through a separate channel. Treat pressure to act now and tell no one as the alarm, and make sure at-risk relatives know these habits in advance.
Today, pick a safe word with at least one close family member or friend, and agree on the rule: any urgent call about money or an emergency gets verified by calling back on a known number. Send the message now. This five-minute conversation is the single most protective action in the whole course.
