What prompting really is

Prompting is simply how you communicate with AI — the instructions and questions you give it. And it's the single highest-leverage AI skill there is, because the quality of what you get out is mostly determined by the quality of what you put in. The exact same AI model will give one person a mediocre answer and another person a brilliant one, purely based on how they asked.

Here's the key reframe: prompting is clear communication, not secret syntax. There's no magic incantation. A great prompt is one that clearly conveys what you want, gives the AI what it needs to deliver, and leaves little room for it to guess wrong. If you can clearly explain a task to a capable new assistant, you can prompt well — it's the same skill.

Why prompting matters so much ties back to how AI works: it predicts plausible continuations of your input.
