What Gemini is, and which plan to use
The three layers of Gemini, the models, and the plans.
Gemini is Google's AI assistant — a family of multimodal AI models plus the apps and Google integrations built on them. 'Multimodal' means it works with text, images, files, audio, and increasingly video. This lesson orients you, including a key idea that trips people up: Gemini exists in three layers.
The three layers of Gemini (important). People conflate these, so distinguish them:
- The models — the AI engines (the 'Gemini' models built by Google DeepMind).
- The Gemini app — the standalone assistant at gemini.google.com and on mobile/desktop, where you chat directly.
- Gemini inside other Google products — Gemini built into Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet), Chrome, Search, and Android.
This matters because Gemini's superpower is layer 3 — working inside your Google apps with your real data (Module 3) — which no other assistant does natively.
The models (durable logic). Gemini models come in tiers, and the naming follows a pattern: Flash = the fast, efficient everyday model (available free); Pro = the most capable model for complex reasoning. The generation number (e.g., 'Gemini 3') and point versions change every few months, so learn the Flash = fast, Pro = most capable logic rather than memorizing numbers. (Verify current model names on Google's site.)
The plans (verify current — prices and details shift). Gemini has a free tier and paid tiers:
- Free — the Gemini app with the fast model (and some access to the capable one), image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, and Gems. Genuinely capable for learning and everyday use.
- Google AI Plus (a newer, low-cost tier, ~$5/mo) — higher limits, video generation, and Gemini in Gmail.
- Google AI Pro (~$20/mo) — much higher limits, a very large context window, Gemini across Gmail/Docs/more, video generation, and extra storage.
- Google AI Ultra — the top tier (higher price), with the most usage and earliest access to advanced features.
- Google Workspace (business) — Gemini bundled into business/enterprise Workspace, with separate, stronger data protections (Module 4) — the right choice for work with sensitive data.
(Verify current plans and prices — Google changes these regularly; usage is 'compute-based' and refreshes over time.)
How to pick. Start on Free to learn Gemini — it's capable. Upgrade to Google AI Pro when you want higher limits, the Workspace integration across your Google apps, and the bigger features. If you use Google Workspace for work, note that business Gemini has better data protections for sensitive use. Most people start free and upgrade for the Workspace integration and higher limits.
The takeaway: Gemini is Google's multimodal AI assistant, existing in three layers — the models, the standalone Gemini app, and Gemini inside Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet, Chrome), the last being its superpower. Learn the durable model logic — Flash (fast everyday, free) and Pro (most capable) — rather than version numbers, which change. The plans: Free (capable, with image gen, Deep Research, Live, Gems), Google AI Plus (~$5, more limits + video + Gmail), Google AI Pro (~$20, big limits + Workspace integration + large context), Ultra (top tier), and Workspace business (stronger data protections for sensitive work). Start free, upgrade for the Workspace integration and higher limits, and use business Gemini for sensitive work. Verify current models, plans, and prices.
Set up: open Gemini at gemini.google.com (and get the mobile app) with your Google account. Note the three layers — the models, the Gemini app, and Gemini inside Google products — and the durable model logic (Flash = fast/free, Pro = most capable). Check Google's site for current model names and plan prices. Decide: start free, with your upgrade trigger being the Workspace integration and higher limits (Google AI Pro).
