Module 1: Getting Started with ChatGPT

Your first real tasks

Hands-on wins to feel ChatGPT's value.

The fastest way to learn ChatGPT is to use it for real tasks. This lesson gives you quick, genuinely useful things to try — so you feel its value first-hand and build the habit before the advanced features.

Great first tasks:

  • Draft or rewrite an email — 'Write a polite email declining this' or 'Make this clearer and more concise.' Email is where most people feel the value fastest.
  • Summarize something long — paste a long article or thread, or attach a PDF, and ask for the key points and action items.
  • Explain or learn something — 'Explain [topic] simply,' then ask follow-ups until it clicks. ChatGPT is a patient tutor (there's even a Study Mode).
  • Brainstorm — 'Give me 15 ideas for…,' then refine the good ones.
  • Generate an image — 'Create an image of…' — a quick way to see ChatGPT's image generation.
  • Get help with a plan or decision — 'Make me a step-by-step plan for…' or 'Help me think through…'.

Use the conversation. For each, remember the rhythm: ChatGPT drafts, you refine. Ask for changes, more detail, a different angle. The value is in the back-and-forth.

Verify what matters. From your first tasks, build the habit central to this course: for anything factual or important, verify it — ChatGPT can be confidently wrong (Module 4). Use it for drafts, ideas, and summaries you check, not as an infallible source.

What you're building. These simple tasks teach the fundamental ChatGPT workflow — a clear request, a conversation to refine, and your judgment on the result. Everything advanced — Custom GPTs, Deep Research, image generation, agents — builds on this same foundation, so get comfortable here first.

The takeaway: learn ChatGPT by using it for real tasks — draft or rewrite an email (fastest value), summarize something long (paste text or attach a PDF), explain or learn a topic with follow-ups (try Study Mode), brainstorm ideas, generate an image, or work through a plan or decision. For each, use the rhythm — ChatGPT drafts, you refine through conversation — since the value is in the back-and-forth. From the start, verify anything factual or important, because ChatGPT can be confidently wrong. These simple tasks teach the fundamental workflow (clear request, refining conversation, your judgment) that every advanced feature builds on.

Try it

Do three real tasks: draft or rewrite an email, summarize something long, and either brainstorm something or generate an image. Iterate at least once on each to refine it. Verify any facts. You've now felt ChatGPT's everyday value and built the foundation the rest of the course builds on.
