Choosing your path: chat-based vs. no-code builders
The two on-ramps, and why you start with the easy one.
There are two routes to building an agent as a non-engineer, and picking the right starting one makes all the difference. This course deliberately starts you on the gentle path before the more capable one.
Path 1: Chat-based agents (start here). The easiest way to build your first agent is inside an AI chat tool you may already use: Custom GPTs (in ChatGPT), Claude Projects, or Gemini Gems. These let you create a specialized assistant by writing instructions and uploading knowledge — mostly point-and-click, no separate platform, no technical setup, no wrestling with connecting apps. They're "lightly agentic": excellent for an assistant grounded in your instructions and knowledge, with some built-in tools (like web search), and a great place to learn the core skills of instructing and grounding an agent. That's Module 2.
Path 2: No-code agent builders (graduate to these). When you want an agent that connects to your other apps and takes actions — reading your email, updating a spreadsheet, posting to a channel, running on a schedule — you move to a dedicated no-code builder like Zapier, n8n, Make, or Lindy. These give agents real tools and triggers (Module 1's parts) so they can act across your software. They're more powerful and a bit more involved to set up. That's Module 3.
Why start with chat-based. The chat-based tools let you learn the two most important, most transferable skills — writing good instructions and adding knowledge — without the added complexity of connecting apps and managing tools. Everything you learn there carries directly into the no-code builders; you're just adding tools and triggers on top later. Starting simple means you get a working assistant today and build confidence before tackling the more capable tools.
A note on the tools themselves. All these products change fast — features, limits, and prices shift every few months. This course teaches the durable skills (instructions, knowledge, tools, safety) and shows you what each tool is for, but you should always check the current details on the tool's own site before relying on specifics.

Module 3: graduate to no-code builders — give your agent tools and triggers to act across apps. Module 4: the honest part — reliability, safety, and building responsibly. By the end you'll have built real agents and know how to do it safely.

Does it need to *act across your apps* (read email, update sheets, run on a schedule)? You'll still start chat-based to learn the basics, then move to a no-code builder in Module 3. Note which chat tool you already have access to — that's the easiest place to begin.
