Module 2: Using Agents Safely & Going Further

How to start using agents safely

A simple checklist for your first agent use.

Ready to actually try an AI agent? Here's a simple, practical checklist to start safely — putting together everything from this course into a first-use plan.

The safe-start checklist:

  • Start with low-stakes, reversible tasks. For your first agent uses, pick things where a mistake costs nothing — drafting, summarizing, research, throwaway code, organizing. Build trust and understanding before letting an agent near anything important or irreversible.
  • Supervise it — watch what it does. Especially at first, keep an eye on the agent's steps rather than walking away. You'll learn how it behaves, where it goes wrong, and when to step in.
  • Require your approval for consequential actions. Don't let the agent send, delete, buy, or publish without checking with you (last lesson). Keep yourself as the decision-maker on anything that matters.
  • Limit its access (least privilege). Give it only what the task needs — read-only where possible, one area rather than all your accounts. Don't connect it to everything by default.
  • Verify its output. Check the agent's work before you act on it — it can be confidently wrong, and it can get stuck or go off track on longer tasks.
  • Be cautious with untrusted content. Be careful letting an agent that has access to your private information freely act on web pages, emails, or documents from unknown sources (the hidden-instruction risk).

The gradual approach. Don't jump to "autonomous agent running important things." Start small and supervised, and expand as you build confidence in a specific agent for a specific type of task. As you see where it's reliable (narrow, bounded tasks) and where it isn't (long, complex, unsupervised work), you'll develop good judgment about what to trust it with.

The right expectation. Used this way — low-stakes first, supervised, limited access, approval on what matters, outputs verified — agents are a genuinely useful, safe tool. Used carelessly — broad access, no oversight, trusted blindly on important tasks — they're a real risk. The checklist is what keeps you on the safe side.

The mindset: start using agents safely with a simple checklist: begin with low-stakes, reversible tasks, supervise what the agent does, require your approval for consequential actions, limit its access to only what's needed, verify its output, and be cautious with untrusted content. Start small and supervised, then expand as you build confidence in a specific agent for a specific task. This gradual, guarded approach gives you agents' real benefits without the risks — the difference between using agents wisely and getting burned.

Try it

Plan your first safe agent use: pick one *low-stakes, reversible* task to try an agent on. Write your safeguards: how will you supervise it, what would need your approval, what's the minimum access it needs, and how will you verify its output? Start there, and expand only as you build confidence.
