n8n
n8n is an open-source workflow automation platform that lets users build complex automations through a visual, node-based interface

Turn scripts into workflows, APIs, and internal tools.
Windmill is a great fit for teams that want to self-host internal tooling and automation instead of paying per-seat for Retool or Pipedream, and its performance versus other workflow engines is a real selling point. Be clear-eyed about the licensing: AGPL plus proprietary pieces in the Community Edition mean embedding it in a product or offering it as a service needs a commercial license, though internal use is free. Note too that the project is currently not accepting outside code contributions.

Windmill is a developer platform that turns scripts into webhooks, scheduled jobs, workflows, and auto-generated internal UIs. Teams self-host it to automate internal processes.
Windmill is an open-source developer platform that turns ordinary scripts into APIs, scheduled jobs, workflows, and internal UIs. You write a function in Python, TypeScript, Go, Bash, SQL, and more, either in its web IDE or synced from your own Git repo, and Windmill automatically parses the parameters to generate a web form and a webhook endpoint. Scripts can be chained into flows, triggered by schedules, webhooks, HTTP routes, Kafka, WebSockets, or email, and composed into richer low-code apps. It positions itself as a self-hostable alternative to Retool, Pipedream, and Superblocks and a simplified take on Temporal. The backend is Rust with a Postgres job queue, the frontend is Svelte, and jobs are sandboxed with nsjail. It deploys via Docker Compose or Kubernetes. Windmill is AGPL-3.0, though the distributed Community Edition bundles some proprietary features under source-available terms, and commercial redistribution or managed-service use requires a license. Internal use is free.
