Sweep began in 2023 as a GitHub bot that turned issues into pull requests, launched through Y Combinator's Summer 2023 batch by former Roblox engineers William Zeng and Kevin Lu. Since then the product has narrowed its focus to deep integration with JetBrains IDEs such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, PhpStorm, Rider, and CLion, where it indexes the Program Structure Interface so it understands classes, methods, and variables the way the IDE does. The product combines two experiences. A low-latency next-edit autocomplete, powered by a small custom model, predicts your next change as you type, while a broader agent can plan and edit multiple files to complete refactors, fix bugs, and respond to review feedback. In February 2026 Sweep released an open-weight 1.5B-parameter next-edit model that the team says punches above its size on next-edit benchmarks while remaining small enough to run locally. Sweep sits in a crowded field alongside GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and other agentic coding tools, but its differentiator is a JetBrains-first design rather than a VS Code fork. That makes it most compelling for teams already standardized on JetBrains, and less relevant for developers who live in other editors.
