Toolglade’s take

A great fit when you need fast, private, offline TTS on modest hardware, especially for Home Assistant, accessibility, or embedded voice. Voice quality is good for the footprint but not at the level of top cloud or cloning engines, and the public call for maintainers is a real signal to factor into long-term bets. The GPL-3.0 license also matters if you plan to bundle it in proprietary software.

About Piper

Piper is a neural text-to-speech engine that turns text into natural-sounding speech entirely on your own device, even on low-powered hardware. Developers use it to add offline voices to apps and devices.

Piper is a fast, fully local neural text-to-speech engine designed to run well even on low-power devices like the Raspberry Pi. It embeds the espeak-ng phonemizer and generates natural-sounding speech entirely offline, with no cloud dependency, which makes it popular in privacy-focused and embedded setups. The piper1-gpl repository is the current home of the project under the Open Home Foundation, installed as the piper-tts Python package. It offers a command-line interface, an HTTP server, Python and C/C++ APIs, and a large library of pre-trained voices across many languages that you download and run locally. Piper is widely used by Home Assistant for voice responses, by the NVDA screen reader for accessibility, and by many other open-source voice projects. The maintainers have posted a public call for new maintainers, so prospective adopters should weigh the project's current support level.
