Toolglade’s take

Marker is one of the stronger open document-to-Markdown converters, and a sensible default if you are feeding a RAG system and want structure, not just raw text. Just read the model-weights license before deploying commercially, since the free tier is capped at $5M in funding/revenue. If you only have CPU and no equations, its fast no-OCR mode is handy; for the highest accuracy on scans and math, you will want a GPU and the LLM hybrid flag.

Should you use Marker?

About Marker

Marker converts PDFs, Word, PowerPoint, and images into clean Markdown, JSON, or HTML with high accuracy. Developers use it to prepare documents for AI pipelines and RAG. Note: the code is open-source but the models carry usage restrictions.

Marker is a document-conversion pipeline from Datalab that turns PDFs, images, and Office files (DOCX, PPTX, XLSX), plus HTML and EPUB, into clean Markdown, JSON, HTML, or RAG-ready chunks. It reads a document's embedded text, detects layout, formats tables, equations, and code blocks, strips page headers and footers, and extracts images. It only calls its vision model where the text layer is bad or scanned, which keeps it fast. An optional hybrid mode passes pages to an LLM (Gemini, Claude, OpenAI-compatible, Ollama, and others) for higher accuracy. It runs on GPU, CPU, or Apple Silicon and offers a CLI, a Python API, a small FastAPI server, and a Streamlit app. Teams building retrieval pipelines and document-processing workflows use it to get structured text out of messy real-world files. Note the licensing split: the code is Apache-2.0, but the model weights use a modified OpenRAIL-M license that is free for research, personal use, and companies under $5M in funding/revenue, with paid licensing required above that.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Handles many input formats (PDF, images, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML, EPUB) and outputs Markdown, JSON, HTML, or chunks sized for RAG
  • Preserves structure: tables, equations as LaTeX, code blocks, reading order, and image extraction, with headers/footers removed
  • Selective OCR keeps it fast by only invoking the vision model on bad or scanned pages, with a CPU-only no-OCR path available
  • Optional --use_llm hybrid mode works with Gemini, Claude, OpenAI-compatible, Azure, Vertex, OpenRouter, or local Ollama models
  • Apache-2.0 code with CLI, Python API, batch processing, and a simple API server

Cons

  • Model weights are not freely commercial: a modified OpenRAIL-M license caps free use at under $5M funding/revenue and requires paid licensing above that
  • Best accuracy needs a GPU plus a local inference server (vLLM via Docker, or llama.cpp on CPU/Apple Silicon), adding setup
  • Very complex layouts with nested tables and forms may still convert poorly
  • The built-in API server is explicitly basic and not intended for large-scale production use
