Run open LLMs locally with a simple interface.
KoboldCpp is an excellent all-in-one local runner, especially if you want creative-writing and roleplay features or a grab-bag of extras (image gen, TTS, vision) in one file. The single-executable, no-install design makes it one of the friendliest ways to run GGUF models locally. Teams that only need a clean inference server with an OpenAI API might prefer a leaner tool, and remember the AGPL-3.0 license has implications if you build a networked service on top of it.

KoboldCpp is a self-contained way to run open language models on your own computer, with a built-in interface and API. It is popular for local text generation and roleplay without the cloud.
KoboldCpp is a self-contained local AI runner built on llama.cpp that bundles a model backend, a web UI, and APIs into a single executable with no installation. It runs GGUF models on CPU or GPU (with partial or full offload) and keeps backward compatibility with older model formats. Beyond text generation it has grown to cover image generation and editing (Stable Diffusion, SDXL, Flux), speech-to-text via Whisper, text-to-speech, image recognition, MCP tool calling, and web search/RAG. It ships the KoboldAI Lite UI, which includes chat, instruct, adventure, and storywriter modes, character cards, memory, and world info, so it is popular for creative writing and roleplay as well as general local inference. It exposes multiple compatible APIs, including an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, so other apps can connect to it. Prebuilt binaries exist for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with Colab and Docker options. KoboldCpp's own code and the Lite UI are AGPL-3.0, while the underlying llama.cpp and related libraries are MIT. Models are not included; you download GGUF files separately.
