Pi, short for Personal Intelligence, is a consumer AI assistant from Inflection AI built around warmth, empathy, and safe conversation. Rather than competing on raw reasoning or coding, Pi is designed as a supportive companion for emotional support, journaling, brainstorming, and coaching-style chats, with a natural voice-chat experience, memory retention, cross-device sync, and access to real-time web search. Inflection AI was founded in 2022 by Mustafa Suleyman, Reid Hoffman, and Karen Simonyan, and raised significant capital, including a $1.3 billion round in 2023. In March 2024, Microsoft hired Suleyman, Simonyan, and most of Inflection's technical staff and paid roughly $650 million to license the company's technology, a widely reported reverse acqui-hire that was a licensing and talent deal rather than a formal acquisition. Inflection remained independent and pivoted toward enterprise and government AI under new CEO Sean White. Pi continues to operate at pi.ai and is reported to be entirely free, with Inflection stating its intent to keep it that way. However, independent 2026 reviews note that Pi's development pace slowed after the 2024 team departure and that it is no longer at the frontier of general model capability.
