Muse Code is a terminal-native agent from Meta Superintelligence Labs that has no editor at all: you give it a goal on the command line and it works across the repository. Its signature is fast Tab completion, but it also offers a chat sidebar and Agent modes that can make multi-file changes and run cloud agents. Muse Code removes the editor entirely. It is a command-line agent powered by Meta's Muse Spark 1.2 model: you install it, describe a task, and it plans, edits multiple files, and validates results with minimal intervention. Its distinguishing feature is persistent background sub-agents that can keep working on parts of a job while the main session continues. Launched in beta in early August 2026 and Mac-first, it is aimed at developers comfortable delegating whole tasks to an autonomous process rather than supervising each change in an editor. As a beta, its behavior and feature set should be considered provisional.

Capability and models

Cursor is model-flexible. It provides access to frontier models from multiple providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, and layers its own first-party models and tooling on top. This lets users pick the model that suits a task and keeps Cursor useful as the underlying model landscape shifts. Its capabilities span quick autocomplete, conversational edits, and more autonomous agent runs, all inside one editor.

Muse Code is single-stack: it runs on Muse Spark 1.2, which Meta says was co-trained with the agent so the model is tuned specifically for long-horizon autonomous repository work. Early third-party coverage frames its strength as cost-efficiency on real engineering tasks rather than benchmark supremacy. Because it is a beta from a single vendor, users are betting on Meta's model-agent co-design rather than choosing among providers, and reliability claims should be verified independently as the product matures.

Pricing and the data tradeoff

Cursor uses conventional subscription tiers. There is a free Hobby plan, a Pro plan at $20/month that adds extended Agent limits, frontier-model access, MCPs, and cloud agents, a Pro+ tier around $60/month with roughly triple the usage, and an Ultra tier around $200/month with about twenty times the usage. Pricing is predictable for the flat portion, though heavy frontier-model usage can consume included credits and add metered cost. For most individual developers, the $20 Pro plan is the reference point.

Muse Code bills purely by token usage. Its Standard tier is roughly $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens, with cached input much cheaper (around $0.15 per million), and Meta states Standard-tier prompts are kept out of training. The notable option is the Contributor tier at approximately $0.10 per million input and $0.20 per million output tokens, a large discount granted in exchange for permission to train future Meta models on your prompts and completions. Reporting indicates the Contributor tier also has a much lower rate limit (around 60 requests per minute versus 3,000 on Standard).

That discount is the crux of the honest comparison. The cheapest way to run Muse Code means giving Meta your code and conversations as training data, which is fine for hobby or open work but generally unsuitable for proprietary or client code. Cursor's subscription model, by contrast, keeps costs predictable and does not require a data-sharing bargain to reach its lower price points. It is a strong default for day-to-day feature work where a human stays closely in the loop, and its free tier lowers the barrier to trying it.

Muse Code suits developers who want to hand off entire tasks to a headless agent, who value persistent background sub-agents, and who are cost-sensitive at scale. It is most compelling for non-sensitive or open-source work where the Contributor tier's data sharing is acceptable, and where a Mac-first beta's rough edges are tolerable.

Choose Cursor if you want AI features inside a familiar graphical IDE, prefer predictable subscription pricing (including a free tier to start), value the ability to switch among multiple frontier models, and want to review changes visually as you go.
